I was travelling by myself in August and stopped for one night with Margaret and Nicky. They made me feel so welcome especially as I was their only guest during the quiet season, we chatted for so long in the evening that it was like staying with another member of my family. I will be recommending them to all my friends and family and hope to return myself one day.

Wonderful Accommodation Experience

We stayed 8 years ago at Bay-view with Margaret and did not consider staying anywhere else but there upon our return to Kiakoura on 1 May this year. It was lovely to meet up with her again and also meet her daughter, Nicky. Both Margaret and Nicky made us feel so at home that we felt that we were just visiting friends instead of staying in a B & B. If you are visiting Kaikoura and you don’t stay at Bay-view, then you are missing out on a wonderful accommodation experience.

Wonderful, Colourful Garden

We stayed here in February and can’t recommend it enough. Margaret is a lovely lady who belies her 80-odd years, baking bread, cooking breakfast, growing vegetables and tending her wonderful, colourful garden. She and Nicky, her daughter who took the booking and advised in advance how to go whale-watching, made us very welcome. The house is above the town, which is reachable either by a walk through the wooded hill or by a short drive. The best restaurant in town is at the same end of town, near a wonderful spot of the coast where the seals laze about. If you’re going to Kaikoura, and you should, check to see if Margaret has a room!

We felt very comfortable and at home at this B&B. The accommodations were great and the homemade breakfasts were delicious. You will not find a more caring host.

Handy location. We had a private bathroom. There are other rooms. Margaret let us check our email. She does not have WiFi.

Staying with Grandma Margaret

On arrival at Bayview we were greeted by Margaret (and her daughters who happened to be there at the time) and we immediately felt at home. After settling in Margart took the time to chat to us over a cup of tea and slice of cake, helped us arrange our whale watching trip the following day and gave us good tips on where to go and what to see. Our room was comfortable and the breakast was a hearty one – just what we neded to set us up for the day. Overall a delightful place to stay with a wonderful host.

If you are looking for 5 Star luxury this is not for you (after all it is a homestay not a hotel) but if you want 5 star hospitality and friendliness then stay here and you will not be disappointed. Another reviewer said that it was like staying with Grandma – we could not describe it any better.

We stayed with Margaret on New Year’s Eve, the night before we went for a swim with dolphins. She was very welcoming, laid out tea and homemade carrot cake for our arrival and gave us a full fry-up brekkie after our swim. It’s like staying with your Granny, she’s so friendly and interested in where you’re from and lots of chat of the interesting people she has met over the years from operating her B&B. The room we stayed in was ensuite, chintzy and cute – exactly like staying with your Gran! Big thumbs up!

We had a great time in Margaret’s beautiful home, she was very hospitable and prepared such a nice homely breakfast for us (eggs from her hens, fruits/jams from her vegetable plot!) and it was so pleasant to relax in beautiful Kaikoura. If you want to slow it down, and have a chance to chat/play the piano/read and enjoy the scenery, I would highly recommend Margaret’s home.

I arrived in Kaikoura, after a 3 and a half hour journey, down from Nelson. The welcome I received from Margaret was warm, and I instantly felt at home. I am travelling on my own in New Zealand, and was feeling a little lonely until I arrived here. I have stayed in many bed and breakfast accommodations, but this is the first place I have felt so totally welcomed.

Aunty Margaret ( I can’t call her Grandma Margaret, because she is the youngest lady in her 80th year I have ever met) provides wonderful cakes, tea, homemade bread, produce from her garden, and if I stayed longer than the 2 planned nights, I’d go home a ten ton tessy!! This has been an experience I won’t forget and I’ve made a good friend into the bargain. Come and stay and find out for yourself!
